Sydney grew up very active. As a child, she played various sports (tennis, baseball and basketball) roller-bladed, climbed trees, jumped rope, just about every activity imaginable. She spent over ten years ballet dancing and learned jazz, Spanish and hip-hop as well. She took up competitive cheerleading in high school where she sustained her first injury: her shoulder. The rigorous lifestyle that was so damaging to the human body turned Syd away from Cheerleading. She looked to healthier forms of movement and discovered Aqua Aerobics, Ballroom Dance, Aerobics, and Personal Training in college.
Syd graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2007 with a double minor in Group Fitness Instruction and Personal Training. She received certifications in both areas from American Counsel on Exercise (ACE) as well as a certification in Group Cycling from Schwinn. She taught Group Kickboxing, Step, Hi-Lo and Strength classes at UCSB.
Following graduation, Syd moved up to the Bay Area where she continued to teach group classes but focused more on Personal Training at a gym where she was the only female trainer. In less than 3 months at her gym, Syd became the number 1 trainer in sales! She continued to thrive at her club and received special training from her manager to be groomed into their idea of the perfect trainer – one that pushes the body to its limits to compete in body building shows and drinks processed protein shakes to help get there. She packed on 12 pounds of muscle in less than a year, above what Physiology books say is possible!
It was no surprise that all the heavy lifting and pressure to lift the most weight led to a back injury that cut Syd’s time at the gym short. Diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease and Facet Joint Arthritis, she moved back to her hometown of San Diego to heal. She took up yoga, learning Iyengar, Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Sivananda and searched for the right healers to help her. She found Japanese Acupuncture, a chiropractor specializing in Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET) and postural exercises through the Egoscue Clinic. She also discovered what nutrition really meant and realized just how awful gyms are at advocating that.
Syd utilizes all that she has learned, and continues to learn through research, education and practical experience to work with her own clients. Through proper nutrition, postural alignment, yoga, strength training and stress management, Sydney is able to manage her chronic pain and in turn continue her dream of helping individuals lead healthier lives!
